A quality education
Call it a personal passion for excellence. But AM Singhvi, the group president of the AV Birla Group, has a personal ambition that Quality and Excellence be introduced as subjects at the school and college level. ``It is good to build awareness about quality and excellence at an early stage of an individual's life,'' Singhvi feels. While it is just a thought in Singhvi's mind, he is quite sure that he will make a serious attempt at bringing together similarly thinking minds to make the dream come true.Kidding me?
Another one to get personal was Motherson Sumi Systems Ltd's (MMSL) vice-president NS Iyer. Talking on cutting down overheads in his presentation, ``Less overheads is better. When I look at myself in the mirror, I'm a happy man,'' said a visibly bald Iyer to an amused audience.
Downsizing government
The Cabinet Secretary, Prabhat Kumar's speech at the special plenary on ``Quality in Government'' not only drew accolades from the audience but hadthe CII beaming. For once, here was a bureaucrat talking like a manager and advocating hitherto unmentionable strategies for government such as delayering and downsizing. In fact, Kumar indicated that after the Y2K threat was over, he planned to push administrative reforms based on TQM. Good governance that.
