New Delhi, Nov 21: The Government has decided not to amend the Prasar Bharati Act for the moment. This is so as amendments to the Act have to be approved by Rajya Sabha in which the Government does not have a majority. The National Democratic Alliance in its election manifesto had called for a comprehensive re-look of the Prasar Bharati Act. But sources said that for making amendments to the Act, the Government may have to wait for three years for the composition in the Rajya Sabha to change.Meanwhile, the Government has initiated the recast of the Prasar Bharati board. To begin with, Romila Thapar and Rajendra Yadav will be removed from the five-member board and efforts are on to replace them with professionals. To make the members more accountable, the Government is thinking of giving specific responsibility to each of them.
The notification announcing the changes in the board is likely to be issued on Monday. Necessary approval for the same has already been taken from the law ministry. There will be nochanges in the status of other members, namely, BG Verghese, Abid Hussain and UR Rao. However, the Government wants the board to be run by professional in due course.
