Pune, Nov 17: The Indian exporters of basmati rice are bouyant in view of the bumper crop expected this year. The Indian basmati exports of about 6 lakh tonnes last year is expected to increase by about 1 lakh tonnes, according to Gurnam Arora, the president of All India Rice Exporters' Association.Talking to UNI, Arora, who is also the managing director of Satnam Overseas Limited, a government of India recognised trading house, said india continues to enjoy the leading status of basmati rice exporter over Pakistan though its prices are lower than the Indian variety.
While Pakistan has a slight edge over India in the Dubai market, the Indian basmati dominates Saudi Arabia by margin of 80:20 over our immediate neighbour. This is mainly because Pakistan went in for cross variety of the flavoured rice, while the Indian production dominantly is the traditional variety over the cross variety.
