Bangalore, Nov 12: The Karnataka government on Friday assured the opposition in the assembly that it would not hesitate to resort to market intervention after exhausting all avenues to help onion growers who were in distress following a crash in the onion prices.Agriculture minister TB Jayachandra, said the government was alive to the situation faced by the farmers, but did not want to act in haste in intervening in the market as some irregularities were reported in such earlier interventions.
Jayachandra, who was replying to an adjournment motion sought to be moved by Janata Dal (U) on the issue, said the prices of onion were improving in the last couple of days.
However, he said, "we will not hesitate to intervene in the market after exhausting all avenues".
The centre, he said, had permitted the state to export 3,617 metric tonnes of rose onion, which is grown around Bangalore and is not consumed locally.
Jayachandra said the state government was also making efforts for export of the remaining rose onion production.
