Mumbai, Nov 5: Magnetic Optical (MO) disk drives have undergone tremendous development and improvement over the years to become highly useful for even PC users. Small companies with networked environment, might find these storage devices more useful as it eliminates all scare of data erosion.MO disk drives are more like hard disk drives save for its physical touch. In a hard disk, a head writes on the platter and thus data is stored but in a MO drive, it is the duty of optical laser. It has very high archive life than any conventional data storage device. The drive also eliminates any damage to data as happens in the case of floppy drives and diskettes. MO disks are rugged and highly reliable. With major manufacturers like Mitsubishi, Hewlett Packard, Sony and Fujitsu coming out with lower-end products, the magnetic optical disk drives may become a serious option.
The drives have a storage capacity up to few gigabytes, making them ideal for companies. Fujitsu has come out with two models, 640AI costingRs 16,200 for the lower-end with 640 mb capacity and 1300 SD external unit with price tag of Rs 35,540. The external unit in 640 mb category is to cost around Rs 19,450.
Last week, processor prices continued their downward journey. Following a massive drop in Intel processors, AMD K6 series CPUs are also witnessing a slide in the range of around Rs 1000. Also the price rise in the motherboard market seems have been halted as the dealers are receiving their stocks. Intel products in particular are selling at the same rates as the previous week.
