New Delhi, Nov 7: According to the most conservative estimate of the central team about 3.23 lakh hectares of crop area has been affected by the recent severe super cyclonic storm in Orissa.The central team which made a rapid areal survey, however, could not estimate the loss of lives. Unofficially this figure can be counted in lakhs, the sources said. The team also has not been able to identify as to how many areas of the state is still unaccessible to relief operations.
The special secretary in the agriculture ministry, JNL Srivastava said that according to the estimate of the state government cattle death would amount to 24,965. He said that there is adequate stocks of food and medicines now with the state government. The problem is not now that of stocks and supply but effective distribution channels.
The high-intensity cyclonic storm moved further northwestwards, intensified into a super cyclonic storm in the night of October 28 and lay centred about 20 km southeast of Paradip in the forenoon ofOctober 29. After crossing the coast it gradually weakened during the next two days over the same area close to Bhubaneswar and lay as a depresion near Chandbali on the morning of October 31. The system drifted southwetwards thereafter and merged with the seasonal trough off Andhra Pradesh coast on November 2.
This super cyclonic storm wrought havoc in coastal districts of Orissa. The whole state remained cutt off from the rest of the country for nearly a week. The telecommunication and power lines and other essential service were paralysed. Though no reports of rainfall have been received from most stations in the tate at the time of ubmission oof this report, the satellite imagery received during the week indicates that heavy to very heavy rains have occurred over Orissa for about 4 days.
WEATHER FORECAST: Normal rain or snowfall is likely to occur in western Himalayas in the first half of the week.
Light rain may also occur in Punjab and Haryana on one or two days. Normal rain is likely inAndaman & Nicobar Islands and south peninsula.
PREVIOUS WEEK'S NE MONSOON REVIEW: Northeast monsoon was active in Kerala and south interior Karnataka on some days of the week ended November 3. Rainfall also occurred at most places in Andaman & Nicobar Ilands and at many places in Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, Gangetic West Bengal, coastal Andhra Pradesh, Rayalaseema and Lakshadweep. Rainfall also occurred at a few places in sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, Tamil Nadu and coastal Karnataka and at isolated placess in Bihar, east MP, Telangana, central Maharashtra, Konkan, Goa and north interior Karnataka. Weather remained dry in rest regions of the country.
POST-SW MONSOON PERIOD: During the period October 1 to November 3, the cumulative rainfall was normal to excess in 30 out of 35 meteorological sub-divisions of the country.
There was deficient rainfall in Telangana whilst there was scanty rainfall in Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Punjab,Himachal Pradesh and Jammu & Kashmir.
