Thailand rice to Japan tops 66,766 tonnes

Bangkok, Nov 7: Japan bought 66,766 tonnes of Thai rice between April and October to meet its World Trade Organisation (WTO) obligations, the Thai commerce ministry said. It said the purchases amounted to about 22.9 per cent of Japan's total rice imports of 3,05,000 tonnes in the period. "Japan is expected to import additional 80,000 to 100,000 tonnes of Thai rice in the next six months," the ministry said in a statement. The United States was the biggest exporter to Japan under the WTO term, selling 1,37,147 tonnes, or about 45 per cent of the total, in the period.
