Calcutta, Nov 3: The Calcutta Stock Exchange (CSE) board has decided to take 51 scrips out of the specified group with effect from the settlement commencing from November 19,1999. This decision has been taken under bylaw 50 and 51 of CSE.These scrips will now be traded in the 'B' group or the permitted category. Members have been advised not to enter into carryforward trades in these scrips and square up all existing positions before the deadline of November 19.
Bylaw 50 provides that there must be adequate public interest in the company; it should be of "sufficient magnitude and public importance" and should have been incorporated for not less than three years or is the merged entity of which the principal merging companies had been in existence for at least three years prior to the merger.
The CSE authorities had towards the end of last year included 70 odd scrips which included several scrips from the permitted list. The idea was to generate interest in scrips which were actively traded on other stock exchanges.
However, it was found that several scrips continued to be neglected despite being active scrips on other major bourses.
Sources pointed out that it did not make sense to retain scrips which were hardly ever traded in the last nine months.
The scrips which are now being taken out of the 'A' group regional companies like Andrew Yule, Bharat Commerce, Birla Corporation, Britannia, Dunlop, GKW, Ispat Industries, Reckitt & Colman, Shree Synthetics and Tinplate.
Other prominent scrips to be excluded from the specified list are Apollo Tyres, Ashok Leyland, Asian Paints, Bank of Baroda, Bank of India, BHEL, Bombay Dyeing, CMC, Cadbury, Carrier Aircon, Corporation Bank, Dabur, Dr Reddy's, German Remedies, Godrej Soaps, Gujarat Gas, Hero Honda, Hind Lever Chem, ITC Hotels, Indian Oil, Infosys, ITW Signode, JK Corp, LIC Housing, Mahindra & Mahindra, NIIT, Nestle, Novartis, Pfizer, Punjab Tractor, Reckitt & Colman, Shree Synthetics, Siemens, Smithkline Beecham Consumer, Smithkline Beecham Pharma, TN Petro, Tata Power, Vindhya Telelinks, Voltas, VSNL, Wockhardt and Zuari.
Interestingly, some other scrips in the specified list like Hindustan Motors, HDC which were not so liquid have become active again in the last couple of months and hence were not considered in the reshuffle exercise. The list would be subject to a periodic review to ensure that only active scrips remain in the specified list, board sources pointed out.
