diamond industry

Facts -- World

The African continent is rich in diamonds. Diamonds are found deep inside the earth’s crust, on river beds and deep beneath the sea.

De Beers’ own mines produce 50% of the roughs scattered over Africa. It further controls 20-25% of roughs through its marketing contracts.

However, even De Beers is sifting through mineral ores collected over the last century & kept as waste for gems & smaller roughs.

Canada, the latest entrant on the diamond map, will add 10 per cent to the total production of roughs at optimum capacity .

The Millennium Star is the largest diamond mined this century. Apart from such big diamonds, most others have no resale value.
