Heavy rainfall likely in Orissa, Bengal and Bihar

New Delhi, Oct 31: Severe super cyclonic storm struck Orissa coast centering Paradip on October 29 killing several hundreds and affecting 10 million people. All the communication facilities has been snapped.

According to IMD a cyclone of wind speed of about 80 to 100 km per hour had hit the northeast of Bhubaneswar by 8.30 am on October 30. This system is likely to weaken and is expected to move north-north eastwards causing rains in Bihar, West Bengal and northeastern states.

This is the worst cyclone after 1989, 1990 and 1997 cyclones in Andhra Pradesh.

The present cyclone originated by a depression formed over east Andaman Sea on October 25. It intensified into a cyclonic storm and lay centered about 350 km northeast of Port Blair on October 26. The cyclonic storm moved west and north westwards, intensified further into a very severe cyclonic storm and was located about 600 km southeast of Paradip on October 27.The IMD had given a forecast of this severe cyclone well three days in advance.

WEATHER FORECAST: Under the influence of the very severe cyclonic storm widespread rain with scattered heavy to very heavy falls are likely over Orissa, West Bengal, Bihar plateau and northeastern states in the first half of the week. Some rains are also expected in east MP, east UP and Bihar plains. Below normal rainfall activity is expected over south peninsula.

NE MONSOOON BEGINS: The southwest monsoon withdrew from Tamil Nadu and Kerala and thus from the entire country on October 21. Simultaneously northeast monsoon rain commenced over Tamil Nadu, Kerala and adjoining areas of Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh on October 21.

PREVIOUS WEEK REVIEW: During the week ended October 7, the northeast monsoon was active in coastal Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Pondicherry and south interior Karnataka on some days. Rainfall also occurred at most places in coastal Karnataka, Kerala, Gangetic West Bengal, Andaman & Nicobar islands and at many places in Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura and Lakshadweep. Rainfall occurred at few places in Orissa, Telangana, Rayalseema, north interior Karnataka, central Maharashtra and Vidarbha and at isolated places in Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Bihar, east MP, Marathawada, Konkan and Goa. Weather remained dry in rest regions of the country.

POST SW-MONSOON REVIEW: During the period October 1 to 27, the cumulative rainfall was normal to excess in 30 out of 35 meteorological sub-divisions of the country. There was deficient rainfall in Telangana Whilst there was scanty rainfall in Haryana, Chandiggarh, Delhi, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir.
