Cipla first-half net profit jumps 21.25 per cent to Rs 67.9 crore

Anju Ghangurde
Mumbai, Oct 25: The Mumbai-based Cipla has registered a 21.25 per cent jump in net profit at Rs 67.90 crore for the half year ended September 30, 1999 as against Rs 56 crore in the corresponding period of the previous year. Net sales/income from operations increased by 24 per cent to touch Rs 400.09 crore as against Rs 322.75 crore in the previous year.

Cipla's whole-time director Amar Lulla told The Financial Express that exports grew by 40 per cent while the domestic business improved by 20 per cent during the period under review. The company hopes to close the current fiscal with turnover in the region of Rs 700 crore to Rs 750 crore.

Lulla said that the company has also lined up a slew of new launches, all exepected to add significantly to both topline and bottomline growth in the future. While the company has already launched its salbutamol HFA inhaler (the first in the domestic market), on the cards are a budesonide (for the first time in the world) and a beclamethasone inhaler.

Exports of the salbutamol HFA inhaler may be a "while away" given that the registration process is rather time-consuming, Lulla added. Another four such anti-asthma products in the pipeline include salmeterol, ipratropium hydrobromide, fluticasone and sodium chromoglycate. A combination of salbutamol and ipratropium is also being planned.

Meanwhile, other income was marginally higher at Rs 12.18 crore as against Rs 11.83 crore in the previous year. Total expenditure was higher at Rs 311.44 crore while interest was significantly lower at Rs 68 lakhs. Provision for taxation was higher at Rs 25 crore as against Rs 19 crore in the previous year.

The company said that its paid up equity share capital will stand increased to Rs 59.97 crore upon allotment of bonus shares already approved by the shareholders at the extra-ordinary general meeting held on September 3.
