Enron, Nortel infray for Gujarat ITES projects

Ahmedabad, Oct 21: American power major Enron and Canadian ISP Nortel have evinced interest in forging strategic partnership with the Gujarat government for its information technology-enabled services (ITES) and telecom projects in the state. The state had recently announced a number of incentives for ITES projects.

Both companies are expected to bring in $20 million by December 2000 for the ITES projects. The bulk of the proposed ITES projects in the state relate to providing infrastructure for the IT corridor and connectivity between the state capital and districts and subsequently, talukas.

Enron India chief executive officer Sanjay Bhatnagar and Nortel managing director Marc Granic are likely to hold talks with state government officials and prospective domestic companies during their scheduled visit to the state for the Office Expo '99 being held from October 22 to 24, said Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) Gujarat region director Sunil R Parekh.

He recalled that negotiations with Nortel were initiated by a CII-GoG joint delegation, led by state chief secretary LNS Mukundan, that visited Canada two months ago.

Parekh said that talks with Motorola were also still at a nascent stage.As per the latest estimates, ITES projects are expected to attract investment worth Rs 81,000 crore and generate jobs for 2 lakh people in the country.

The wide spectrum of ITES in advanced countries range from the state-of-the-art Web-enabled call centre, animation/content development, medical transcriptions, back-office operations, insurance claims processing, legal data base, pay roll and logistic management.

Giving details about Office Expo '99, jointly organised by CII and Gujarat Informatics Ltd (GIL) on `IT, Telecom, Office Products & Services', Parekh said as many as 50,000 professionals and 3 lakh visitors were expected during the three-day exhibition.
