`Radical reforms must to increase export growth'

S Venkitachalam
New Delhi, Oct 15: Commerce and industry minister Murasoli Maran on Friday called for "radical" reforms in the areas of foreign direct investment, special economic zones, labour laws, customs procedures and the Foreign Exchange Regulation Act in order to enhance exports.

Maran said the enlarged industry ministry, with the addition of the commerce ministry, would fulfil the need for a strategy that aims at export-led growth. He said he would continue the process of liberalisation and simplification pursued by his predecessor and would accelerate it to give exporters and industry a level-playing field.

"My first agenda would be export growth," he said, adding that, "My efforts would be to ensure accelerated export growth in the coming years and to ensure an enlarged share for India in the global market."

He said export growth in the last two years had not been good and even during this year, the average growth rate was somewhat below expectations. At the same time, constraints in power and infrastructure sectors had to be slowly overcome, he said.
