Century Textiles eyes 50% jump in productivity

PRESS TRUST OF INDIA
Mumbai, Oct 15: Century Textiles and Industries Ltd on Friday initiated the "total productive maintenance" (TPM) programme aimed at improving productivity by 50 per cent.

"TPM, which is based on preventing breakdowns and accidents and creating a profitable culture with workforce participation, would take two years to complete," Century Textiles president RK Dalmia told newspersons here on Friday.

The minimum requirement for TPM certification is a 50 per cent reduction in work-in-progress, zero accidents, cut in number of breakdowns to 5 per cent and a 75 per cent fall in customer complaints, he said adding "the programme will result in cost reduction and thereby improved profitability."

TPM programme consultant, VN Tikku, said only three other Indian companies had achieved TPM--AV Birla group company Vikram Cement, Sundaram Fasteners and Tanfac. Two other Birla companies--Birla Tyres, Indo Gulf were expected to join the league by the end of this year.
