New Delhi, Oct 7: The Congress has ruled out the possibility of change in leadership due to the reverses suffered in the Lok Sabha elections.Talking to the mediapersons at party headquarters on Thursday, party spokesperson Kapil Sibal said that the party is yet to take stock of the situation but the question of change of leadership did not arise.
Meanwhile, Congress president Sonia Gandhi has said the party would undertake an introspection and frank assessment of the reverses suffered in the Lok Sabha elections before taking a determined action.
In a statement even as the results were pouring in she said the party unhesitatingly accepted the verdict of the people. The election results have not come up to the party's expectations and the party has suffered reverses, she said.
Sonia Gandhi said the party has, however, gained support in some areas and its share of vote has risen.
According to CWC sources, working committee of the party will meet here in a couple of days to take stock of the performance of the party.
In her statement Sonia Gandhi said the task the party has undertaken to give itself a new shape and character and better fulfil the aspirations of the people, has to be pursued with greater vigour.
A greater responsibility now rests on all of us to protect and preserve the basic ethos in the country and our party, she said. When asked about the reasons for poor show of Congress, Sibal said there was more than one reason for the party's debacle in some states, though its vote share has gone up.
He said that trends varied from state to state, the pattern in Karnataka was totally different from adjacent Andhra Pradesh. All these things have to be discussed by the CWC before any corrective action is taken, said Sibal. The Congress, he pointed out, had little option in forging alliances with regional parties, unlike the BJP, since they are the party's principal political rivals.
