Calcutta, Oct 7: Hindustan Motors Ltd (HM) plans to hike production of its flagship product Ambassador and double the production capacity of the new-look multi-utility vehicle Trekker by November 1999. With sales of both the vehicles picking up, HM has decided to step up its output level as a backlog has piled up.The ailing CK Birla outfit's oldest works at Uttarpara in West Bengal completed a Rs 75 crore modernisation-cum-expansion plan in July, resulting in savings on the power and steel consumption front already.
On the completion of the modernisation-cum-expansion programme, executive vice president R Santhanam noted, ``There has been expansion of capacity of the Uttarpara unit.'' In addition to this, imbalances in production capacities have been corrected, he said.
At present, HM manufactures five versions of Ambassador, four versions of Contessa and three versions of Trekker. Its latest plant in Chennai manufactures Mitsubishi Lancer while its Indore plant manufactures rural transport vehicles.
