Bhubaneswar, Sept 28: Despite a strong Vajpayee wave in the state during 13th Lok Sabha polls, Congress is likely to improve its position to seven seats from the five of 1998 election. The Bhartiya Janata Party-Biju Janata Dal alliance had notched up 16 out of 21 seats during the 1998 Lok Sabha poll. The political observers predict the improvement in Congress tally even though the party set to lose some of the important seats like Beherampur and Jajpur which have been consistently represented by Congress. Beherampur has been represented by non-Congress leader just once since independence. This time in Beherampur Jayanti Pattanaik, wife of former chief minister JB Patanaik is fighting tough electoral battle against Anadi Sahoo, who was elected to Lok Sabha from Cuttack constituency in 1996. However Congress is likely to wrest Sambalpur, Deogard, Dhenkanal, Kalahandi, from the alliance. According to B Harichandan a chief minister candidate of the BJP in the coming assembly election to be held onFebruary, except Dhenkanal where party dissident Rudra Pani and Koraput, where Hema Gamang, the wife of chief minister Giridhar Gamang are in the fray, alliance will sweep the poll in the state.
After prime minister Vajpayee had specifically to appeal the voters of the Dhenkanal constituency not to vote independent candidate Pani, things have improved for the alliance candidate Tathagat Sathpathy. Harichandan was even hopeful of winning Jagatsinghpur and Nawarangpur seats which have been represented traditionally by Congress party. Nawarangpur had elected congress candidate Khagapati Pradhani for consecutively nine times. However Pradhani preferred to opt out of the poll this time to express his resentment against the state administration over the issue of withdrawal of below poverty line (BPL) card.
In Deogard, BJP nominee D Pradhan who is also the state minister for Surface Transport in the Union Cabinet is fighting it out with state congress president Hemananda Biswal. Biswal, a Sonia favourite is knownfor his grass root politician. The percentage of victory of BJP-BJD alliance in 11 constituencies which would go to polls October 3, will be much more than that during the 1st phase of poll in the state on September, 25.
