Calcutta, Sept 26: The Calcutta dock system and the Haldia dock complex of the Calcutta Port Trust (CPT) handled a large quantity of imported edible oil during the period from September 17 to 23.According to CPT sources, as many as 22,219 tonnes of various types of edible oil such as refined bridged degummed (RBD) palmolein, rapeseed oil etc were handled at the Calcutta dock compared to 20,600 tonnes in the previous week.
Out of 22,219 tonnes of edible oil, rapeseed oil accounted for 9,221 tonnes of which 3,000 tonnes of the same was imported by landlocked Nepal.Besides, Haldia dock handled around 13,000 tonnes of edible oil of which coconut oil accounted for 6,500 tonnes. There was no arrival of edible oil at Haldia dock in the previous week.
Apart from that, Haldia dock handled 2,800 tonnes of crude palmolein and 1,500 tonnes of palm fatty acid.
Port sources said that Naga Evo, an edible oil tanker carrying 4,000 tonnes of palm oil for Haldia dock has been waiting at the Sandheads since September22. Container handling at the Calcutta dock again crossed the 3000 TEUs mark. Of 3,275 TEUs of containers handled by CDS, around 1,175 TEUs went to various ports. It may be recalled that Calcutta dock handled a record 3,888 TEUs of containers in the week from September 3 to 9.
On thermal coal front, two consignments of thermal coal went to Tuticorin port from Haldia dock out of three ballast coal vessels arrived the dock in the week under review. Arrival of coking coal on the other, was meager with a total of 23,000 tonnes. Port sources said that the handling of imported sugar is likely to be increased remarkably in the next couple of weeks as a number of sugar vessels are scheduled to arrive at the Saugor anchorage, 50 km upstream from the Sandheads, as well as regular arrivals at both the docks.
