UP, MP to face wheat seed shortages this rabi

New Delhi, Sept 26: Major wheat growing states like Uttar Pradesh (UP) and Madhya Pradesh (MP) are likely to face seed shortages in the coming six-month rabi season that begins next month.

In UP alone the seed shortage is estimated to be 50,488 quintal while in MP the shortage is much more at 176,925 quintal.

The demand for certified wheat seeds in the country for this rabi has been put at 2,919,550 quintals byy the Centre. Apart from UP and MP, Karnataka and Sikkim also face seed shortages. According to Centre's the assessment, the total demand for wheat seeds in Karnataka is 9,500 quintals as against the availability of 8,897 quintals. In Sikkim, the demand assessed is 2,580 quintals against the availability of 2,211. However, the availability position of wheat seeds in other states is satisfactory.

In paddy, the demand in the country for certified seeds this rabi is 489,332 quintals. Orissa is likely to face paddy seed shortage to the extent of 32,912 quintals. The total demand for qualifiedcertified seeds for coarse cereals in the country is assessed at 138,435 quintals.

There will be a shortage of coarse cereals seeds in Karnataka to the extent of 1,392 quintals, in Tamil Nadu about 710 quintals and Sikkim to the tune of 493 quintals. In pulses, seed shortages are expected in Karnataka, Pondicherry, MP, Rajasthan, Haryana, Punjab, Orissa and Sikkim. The total demand for qualified certified seeds in pulses is assessed at 293,291 quintals.

In Karnataka the demand for pulses seeds is 30,000 quintals against the availability of 19,068 quintals. In Pondicherry the demand for pulses seeds is 430 quintals while the availability is estimated at 300 quintals.

In MP the demand for pulses seeds is 73,500 quintals as against the availability of 961 quintals. In Rajasthan the demand for pulses seeds is 16,200 quintals against the availability of 15,156 and Haryana, 4,100 quintals as against the availability of 2,679 whilst in Punjab against the demand of 850 quintals, availability is a meagre 84quintals. In Orissa the demand for pulses seeds is 14,000 quintals as against the availability of 13,471 quintals. In Sikkim the demand for pulses seeds is 10 quintals as against the availability of 140 quintal. The total demand for certified edible oilseeds in the country for the rabi season is 398,699 quintals.

There will be shortage of edible oilseeds in Karnataka, Pondicherry, MP, Orissa and Sikkim. In Karnataka the demand for edible oilseeds is 47,400 quintals as against the availability of only 28,455 quintals. In Pondicherry the demand for edible oilseeds is 1,290 quintals as against the availability of 450 quintals.

In MP, the demand for edible oilseeds is 9,000 quintals as against the availability of 3,506 quintals. In Orissa the demand for edible oilseeds is 79,600 quintals as against the availability of 50,844 quintals whilst in Sikkim the demand for edible oilseeds is 450 quintals as against the meagre availability of 250 quintals.
