Neither first, nor second, it's the third front for Mulayam

Dilip Bisoi
Bhubaneswar, Sept 24: Samajwadi Party president and former Union defence minister Mulayam Singh Yadav foresees a hung Parliament, throwing a possibility of a government by the Third Front.

``Neither the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) nor the Congress will get Majority at the hustings. There will be a formation of a non-BJP non-Congress government at the Centre'', said Yadav. According to him, the next government will be formed by the Lok Tantrik Manch of RJD and SP along with other parties including CPI(M). ``Parties, which have any links with BJP would not be taken in the Third Front'', Samajwadi Party supremo clarified while talking to media persons, here on Friday.

Yadav, however, eluded the questions on who will be the Prime Minister if the Third Front would form the government. ``Once the Third Front is formed, the leadership issue will be taken up'', he said. Whether he will be a contender for the top post, he said, it depends on the situation at that time. On the possibility of West Bengal chief minister Jyoti Basu becoming the Prime Minister, he said that ``he has already refused the offer twice.''

On his attention being drawn to the exit poll indicating that the NDA was heading for a majority, Yadav quipped ``Poll ka pole khul gaya hai'' (the exit poll was a conspiracy, which has been exposed).

He said his party would get 60 seats in Uttar Pradesh, leaving 200 seats to BJP. ``The Congress will open its account this time'', he replied, when asked how much Congress will get?

Yadav was here to address an election meeting at Kendrapara. The Samajwadi Party's Orissa president Baishnab Parida is contesting the elections from Kendrapara.

The former defence minister attacked the BJP-led government for the Kargil mess. "The BJP government had utterly failed to protect the territory of the country. Never in the history such thing has happened", he said.
