Mumbai, Sept 20: Wyeth Lederle has discontinued a number of "non-strategic" products and the rationalisation effort will help the company focus sales and marketing efforts on major brands in the areas of female health care, antibiotics, steroids, CNS care and vaccines. The company has registered double digit growth for the first five months of the current fiscal (in line with industry growth) while exports for the period registered a growth of 66 per cent. Capital expenditure for the year has been pegged at Rs 5-6 crores, though the company's top management said that there are no definite plans to set up any greenfield unit.
Wyeth Lederle president and managing director, BR Arora told shareholders at the company's annual general meeting on Monday that the discontinuation of products had impacted domestic sales growth to some extent. Indications are that the company has discontinued 13 products last year and around 15-16 this year.
The company also plans to launch a low dose oral contraceptive, anantibiotic for life threatening infections and an oncology product. A number of other products scheduled for launch in the near future, believed to be an organ trasplant product, among others, are at various stages of clinical trials and registration.
The company has also discontinued clinical trials on Rotashield, an anti-diarrhoea vaccine, following certain adverse events observed overseas. During 1998-99, the company launched two vaccines --Tetramune and Pnu-Imune 23 in the country.
Meanwhile, around 40 people had opted for a voluntary retirement scheme in 1998-99.
