Kochi pepper stays firm

Our Bureau
Kochi, Sept 19: Black pepper maintained it firm stand on the Kochi pepper market during the week-ended Friday. Fresh arrivals into the market was thin and traders were forced to buy on higher levels to cover their position, trade sources said. Brisk trading was reported in October contracts, the only available futures since September 16.

The shrinkage in contracts also led to high volatility and uncertainty in the market. Traders were now pinning their hope on spot pepper which has become the only way out for covering their positions. However, the limited arrivals of the spot material has put further upward pressure on prices. "Between heavy speculation and multiple rumours circulating about the Lampong crop traders here were convinced that prices will go up further", a Kochi-based exporter said.
