Jaipur, Sept 19: With the 100 per cent rise in the milk prices during the last five years, there is every possibility of the consumers paying more in Rajasthan as the competition has now assumed new dimensions between the Rajasthan Cooperative Dairy Federation Ltd( RCDF) and the milk producers.Rajasthan daily produces about 70 lakh litres of milk with the marketable surplus being close to 25 lakh litres. With the freedom having been given to RCDF to fix the milk prices -previously only the government could take a decision in the matter - the finances of RCDF have now begun to show up. Last year it posted a net profit of Rs 2 crore on a turnover of Rs 400 crore. Of Rs 400 crore, about Rs 250 crore goes to the farmers.
RCDF is today controlled and managed by NDDB and it has made ambitious plans to have its turnover rise to Rs 2000 crore in the next ten years, says managing director, RS Gill. And there is no doubt that NDDB has developed lot of speciality in developing the market of milk and milkproducts.
Last year RCDF daily collected about 7 lakh litres of milk in Rajasthan and the Mother Dairy, Delhi, was the bulk buyer at 3 to 4 lakh litres per day.Our milk supplies to Delhi have been rising with the increase in the demand says GS Sandhu, secretary, Animal Husbandry Department and chairman of RCDF.
It was sometime during 1992-93 that RCDF was handed over to NDDB but somehow its losses continued. The government took the decision in favour of NDDB when RCDF even began to default on loan repayments.
