De Beers unveils Millennium Star in UK; Argyle banks on India

MUMBAI, SEPT 19: De Beers, the global diamond major and Argyle Diamonds, its estranged Australian partner, are both in one of the toughest slugfest in the diamond industry. Both are independently pushing their wares in the market to meet the new millennium demand set to catch on from this month.

Last week, De Beers announced the unveiling the finest of its diamond collection in London's newest setting -- The Dome, set next to the Money Zone sponsored by City of London. De Beers has provided a budget of $2 million for the attraction.

The De Beers collection includes the 203 carat `Millennium Star', said to be one of the finest diamonds ever discovered. Others are a total of 11 beautiful blue diamonds of different shapes and carat weights ranging from 5.16 carats to a phenomenal 27.64 carats.

"The Dome will provide a magnificent and fitting setting for the De Beers Millennium Starand will be seen by Dome Visitors throughout the year 2000" said De Beers in a statement.

The Dome visitors will be treatedto a unique diamond exhibition where a total of 12 diamonds, brought together for the first time will form a dazzling display.

Said De Beers chairman Nickey Oppenheimer in a statement released by De Beers: As we approach the new millennium, De Beers is honoured to share these treasures...These diamonds, like all diamonds, have witnessed the last millennium and will outlive the next."

The Dome at Greenwich will be an awe-inspiring exercise. It will contain 14 interactive exhibitions zones themed around life in the year 2000 and beyond. For this purpose, a special The Millennium Experience Company has been floated which in turn has its own website: www.dome2000.co.uk to attract the global visitors.

On its part, Argyle Diamonds plans to catch the fancy of prospective diamond lovers in India by coming together with two leading Indian jewellery makers - Inter Gold and Sparkles.

Recently, it announced the opening in Mumbai a showroom the exclusive collection of diamond studded jewellery.

The `Occasions'jewellery is said to have been fashioned out of Argyle's diamonds, including a collection from `champagne, and `cognac' diamonds as also the widely known white diamonds.

Further, this special range of jewellery will be on display all through September, said Argyle Diamonds.
