Bhel embarks on Rs 1,200 cr update programme

PRESS TRUST OF INDIA

New Delhi, Sept 19: Engineering giant Bhel has embarked on a massive Rs 1,200-crore modernisation programme to cut down manufacturing costs and improve its bottomline, a top company official said. "Bhel is caught in mid-life crisis and we have to re-think. We are taking up a holistic production modernisation programme including layout of our manufacturing facilities," Bhel chairman and managing director KG Ramachandran said.

Beginning with the Bhopal plant, for which modernisation started two months ago, the corporation was finalising the modernisation plan for its Trichy unit, he said adding that Hardwar and Hyderabad plants would also be taken up soon.

Ramachandran said that, more or less, power generation technology, excluding the gas-based technique, had matured and now it was a question of improving on existing product lines for optimal efficiency.
