ESS launches ERP product on the Net

Neeraj Saxena
New Delhi, Sept 16: Eastern Software Systems on Thursday launched its enterprise resource planning software product, Makess, on the internet.By making it available on the Web like `apps-on-tap', ESS hopes to target a much wider clientele than it has got in last two years. Moving away from being a client-server based ERP package, Makess will be able to push for much higher sales in the small and medium enterprise segment, according to promoter and managing director Anil Bakht.

Under the plan, any establishment with a Web-enabled personal computer will be able to subscribe to Makess for a monthly payment of Rs 9,000. This will be irrespective of the number of locations and seats on which a company wants to install the software.

Initially, the company has tied up with two internet service providers Wipro Net and ETH Dishnet, and is talking to more. The ISPs will carry Makess on their websites.

"Net is the best thing to have happened for small enterprises. By putting Makess on the Net, we can potentiallylink entire offices of a small organisation. They will not require EDP operations or have server back-ups in multiple locations,'' said Bakht.

Even a small retail outlet could now benefit by using Makess, but if an enterprise wanted it could also run it on its intranet, said Bakht.ESS has so far sold Makess to 64 companies spanning across 150 sites. Bakht pointed out that Maskess was the first Indian ERP package catering to SMEs which will be available on the Net. On client-server offering, Makess is sold for Rs 5 lakh per seat.

However, for existing customers to migrate to the Net-based Makess package, Bakht said a case-to-case decision would be taken.
