Sonia site bytes more than it can chew

Santosh Tiwary
New Delhi, Aug 27: For a party widely accused of having failed to deliver the goods in 50 years, a 24-hour deadline was just too. The Congress had promised on Wednesday that all questions asked its president at its dedicated site soniagandhionline.com would be answered within a day's time. More than 7000 queries were made. Most of them remain unanswered.

Those who logged on to the site and asked Sonia Gandhi a question have been awaiting a response for more than two days. Well over 72 hours after the site was launched, Congress spokesperson Kapil Sibal told The Financial Express that about 15 per cent of the questions have been answered by Sonia Gandhi. What it means is that not more than a 1000 netizens have been heard.

It was to the great delight of net surfers that the party hooked it president on to the net promising to answer questions regarding Congress, her role in the party, her views on party positions and the upcoming elections.

However, after three days of search for a reply, most ofthem are dejected. Asked one of the answer seeker: "Why do they announce things which they can't manage."

The site is active and is receiving questions with a message "Your question will be answered soon". However, other features of the site like chatrooms and speeches etc., are not functional.

Sibal had said that the party has provided the site to enable all Indians around the world, to be able to contact and voice their concerns and support, for the party and the leadership of Sonia Gandhi.

When asked if Sonia Gandhi can be quoted from the answer she gives, Sibal said "Yes, her views can be quoted from the answers".

As is now clear, only selected questions will be answered by the Congress president, those eager to quiz Sonia Gandhi on controversial issues may not find an answer.

But, will Sonia Gandhi find time during her election campaign to respond to the questions asked on internet? Yes, there will be a group of people to help her out in her absence. According to Sibal, even if she is notavailable, somebody will answer for her, and that will be her views.

Considering the fact that the number of internet users in the country is very small, Sonia Gandhi's views, in any case, will be available to a select few.
