JD(S) promises to review Sena-BJP Enron PPA

Sanjay Jog
Mumbai, Aug 27: Maharashtra Janata Dal (S) which is a partner in the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP)-led Progressive Democratic Front (PDF) has promised a high-level inquiry into the revival of multi-crore Enron project by the ruling Shiv Sena-BJP government.

The 12-page manifesto released by a veteran socialist leader Pramila Dandavate has also expressed a serious concern over the Maharashtra state losing its pre-eminence in the industrial field and attracting investments under the SS-BJP alliance government.

The party has assured that Maharashtra which had gone on number eight on the industrial field, will be brought at top under the PDF government.

The party has also assured installation of power projects to help increase agricultural production, boost agri-business and industrial growth through the supply of assured power supply at low tariffs.

State JD (S) which is contesting 25 assembly seats and two parliamentary seats has objected to the manner in which the Enron project was revived by thesaffron alliance. The party has claimed that the per unit cost has gone up to Rs 5 from the assured Rs 1.86 by the state government mainly due to relating it with the change in the foreign exchange rate.

In the earlier power purchase agreement signed by the Sharad Pawar government, it was given at Rs 2.40 without relating it to the fluctuations in the rupee-dollar rate.

On the contentious issue of sale of surplus land by the Mumbai textile mills, the JD (S) has assured that the PDF government would take over such lands and utilise it for the public purposes and for the revival of mills.

The party has blamed the state government for neglecting the mill workers whose strength has been reduced from 85,000 to mere 40,000.

On the high rate of sales tax, the JD (S) criticised the saffron alliance for various lapses and scams in its recovery and assured that sales tax rates will be restructured in a bid to avoid harassment of traders, producers and consumers at large. Small and Cottage industries would beexempted from stamp duty at the time of purchase of land and loans.

JD (S) alike the NCP has promised the formation of Mahaarashtra Agricultural Value Commission and implementation of crop insurance scheme in the state.

Moreover, the party has assured strengthening of public distribution system and introduction of yellow ration card scheme for those living below poverty line.

On the political front, the JD(S) has promised the revival of Srikrishna Commission report which had probed into the communal riots erupted after the demolition of Babri mosque in December 1992 and February 1993.

Action against culprits both hailing from the Hindu and Muslim communities would be booked. The SS-BJP government has rejected the report while terming it as biased one.

JD(S) has also promised the revival of state minorities commission which was wound up by the saffron alliance government.
