Trinamool sticks to local issues

Sunil Mukhopadhyay
Calcutta, Aug 26: The Trinamool Congress election manifesto, which was released here on Thursday by its supremo Mamata Banerjee, has sidestepped national issues and instead concentrated on those related to West Bengal alone.

Although the party is contesting in the 13th Lok Sabha elections in order to establish a "stable, democratic and secular" government led by an "able prime minister", it demands that the central government help West Bengal, think of its development and also assist real alternative forces in putting an end to the misrule of the Left Front government.

The manifesto observes that the state's industrial infrastructure has all but collapsed. Businessmen and industrialists are afraid of investing in the state and, as a result, not many new industries are coming up here. The increasing sickness of the existing industries has also added to the state's woes. The number of unemployed people has crossed the six million mark and self-employment schemes have failed miserably, the manifestoadded.

The manifesto has promised a special package to attract investment in the state, re-establish work culture and generate employment through expansion of self-employment schemes. It has also promised special packages for the districts to establish industrial units based on locally available raw materials, expansion of tourism, transparency in employment both in the government and private sectors.

Criticising the ruling Left Front for indulging in nepotism and corruption in panchayat matters, the manifesto lays stress on providing land for the economically backward and introducing crop insurance. It has also laid stress on supplying essential commodities in villages through the public distribution system.

If returned to the Lok Sabha, the party promises to make available funds for the development of districts. The manifesto says that funds from the prime minister's office will directly reach the district magistrates' offices. It has promised to give special importance to housing projects to befunded under the Indira Awas Yojana and to provide loans for poultry and cattle development on easy terms. For the development of North Bengal districts, the manifesto lays stress on setting up of pineapple and mango processing & preservation units, food-processing units, industries based on industrial crops like tobacco and jute, and sericulture.
