Calcutta, Aug 24: Complete automation leader Allen-Bradley India Ltd, a wholly-owned subsidiary of the American major Rockwell Corporation, where the Thapars had an equity stake till 1995, is likely to be renamed as Rockwell Automation India Ltd.According to the regional director Ranjan De, the company has already decided to change the name of the company but has not decided upon the date.
"Yes, we will change the name from Allen-Bradley to Rockwell Automation. Allen-Bradley is now one of our four major brands and it deals with control systems and solutions. Rockwell will be the umbrella brand. However, we have not yet initiated the process for changing this name and we have also not decided on the date yet," De said.
He was in the city along with director of Global Infrastructure Industry Development Centre of Rockwell Automation Asia Pacific Ltd, Scott L Summerville to inaugurate a roadshow titled `Automation on the Move'.
Scott said for the eastern India the company is focussing on heavyindustries. "In this part of the country there are the major steel plants and other heavy industries. We will also concentrate on infrastructure related projects like cargo handling at the ports, water treatment plants and waste water treatment plants too," Scott said.
In the recent past the company had installed automation instruments at Nalco's Damanjoli plant and at Tisco's Jamshedpur plant for their batch annealing furnace.
Apart from these two, Allen-Bradley also installed automation components at Haldia Petrochemicals and at the Sail units at Durgapur, Rourkela and Bhillai. ITC and Indal are also customers of Allen-Bradley.
For the financial year October-September 1998-99, the company is likley to register a turnover of Rs 95 crore against Rs 89 crore of the previous fiscal. Next target has been set at Rs 105 crore.
Scott said that almost 60 per cent of their business is generated from retrofitting, which is installation of automation units in the existing machinery.
"A company always cannotset up a new plant. It has to modernise its existing machinery too. So they use certain automation gadgets which is fitted into the old machines. This helps to increase the production capability of the old machines. This constitutes about 60 per cent of our business," Scott said.
The company is also into programme management consultancy. "Suppose, a new plant is being set up with the different machines from different vendors based all over the world. To synchronise all these machines one needs special expertise and we are offering that too," Scott said.
