Calcutta: The arrival of imported sugar especially from Santos (Brazil) is taking place at both the docks of Calcutta Port Trust (CPT). According to port sources, two consignments of sugar totalling 16,285 tonnes arrived at Calcutta and Haldia docks in the week beginning August 13 of which Haldia's share was 12,285 tonnes.Meanwhile, unloading of three sugar vessels at Haldia dock and one at Calcutta is in progress at the same time. Besides, according to sources, Saikung and Lykie, two vessels carrying 14,000 tonnes of sugar each from Santos have been waiting at the Sandheads, mouth of the river Hooghly, since August 16.
Sources said that both the vessels will discharge 5,000 tonnes of sugar each at the Haldia dock and the rest will be unloaded at Diamond Harbour under Calcutta dock system. Sibirisk, another vessel carrying 10,000 tonnes of sugar is expected to arrive at Haldia dock next week.
On coking coal front, as many as four consignments totalling 78,000 tonnes arrived at the Haldia dock on August13 to 19, respectively. According to CPT sources, flow of imported coking coal is to be continued in the next week. CPT sources said that two consignments of coking coal totalling 48,000 tonnes are on its way to Haldia dock. Coking coal is generally imported from New Zealand and Australia and before handling at Haldia dock, it used to partially unload either at Vizag or Paradip ports. Besides, two consignments of thermal coal went to Tuticorin port from Haldia dock and one would sail out.
Container handling at the Calcutta dock was excellent with a total of 2,675 TEUs, of which 600 TEUs went to Singapore.
Out of 6,500 tonnes of edible oil like refined breezed degummed (RBD), palmolein and soyabean oil handled at Calcutta dock, landlocked Nepal's share was 3,000 tonnes of soyabean oil. Moreover, Haldia dock handled 2,500 tonnes of palmolein and rapeseed oil.
On petroleum oil and lubricant (POL) products front, the throughput at Haldia oil jetty was 1,14,400 tonnes, of which high speed diesel accountedfor 50,000 tonnes and carbon black feed stock (CBFS) 35,000 tonnes.
On the other hand, the throughput of the same at Calcutta dock was 31,000 tonnes of which superior kerosene oil accounted for 20,000 tonnes and motor spirit 8,000 tonnes.
Crude throughput at Haldia oil jetty was 87,000 tonnes during the period under review.
Among other commodities, Haldia dock handled 15,499 tonnes of phosphoric acid and 1,247 cubic metre of logs were handled by Calcutta dock. Besides, a single vessel arrived at Calcutta dock for scrapping.
Apart from that, around 23,000 tonnes of steel were exported from Haldia dock and around 6,838 tonnes of steel coils arrived at the Calcutta dock.
