G-15 meet concludes with focus on WTO agreements
PRESS TRUST OF INDIA
Bangalore, Aug 18: The group of 15 (G-15) developing nations on Wednesday agreed to focus on implementation delays on the existing agreements at the WTO's Seattle ministerial meeting, while asserting that no purpose would be served by taking up fresh issues before these were tackled.Briefing reporters at the end of the two-day conference here, commerce minister Ramakrishna Hegde said there was a sense of unity among the member-states and a new awareness of the pitfalls ahead if developing nations rushed in for fresh trade negotiations. Given the importance of finding effective solutions to the implementation problems, a need was felt for adoption of a coordinated and mutually supporting position by G-15 nations through their permanent representatives in Geneva to ensure that corrective measures are taken by the Seattle meeting in November. While unanimously reiterating their opposition to linking social clauses with trade, the conference registered a protest against moves by developed countries to bring inanything that would result in prevention of access to their markets for goods from developing and least developed nations.
