Jagdish Tytler: On a comeback trailJagdish Tytler is no stranger to Delhi politics. So when the Congress decided to field him from the Delhi Sadar Lok Sabha constituency on Tuesday, it was no surprise. He has represented this constituency earlier too.
The significance is that the Congress party has now rehabilitated him publicly. After the 1984 anti-Sikh riots in Delhi in the wake of Indira Gandhi's assassination, Tytler had gone into political blackout. He had to face legal cases implicating him in the infamous riots in Delhi.
Luckily for him, the courts exonerated him of these charges recently. It came handy for the party to take a decision in his favour. Even so, at one stage it appeared that his case had gone out of hand. The reason? A party stalwarts like former finance minister Manmohan Singh had reportedly objected to his nomination because of the stigma of 1984 riots. For the same reason, after all, Tytler's party colleague Sajjan Kumar had failed to get the party nomination from OuterDelhi.
Also, Tytler's case was somewhat different. He got absolved of the charges from the judiciary only recently. That apart, he has enjoyed proximity to 10, Janpath, even while being under a cloud on account of the riots. This was not so in the case of Sajjan Kumar.
Now Madan Lal Khurana has reasons to be worried. Tytler's comeback is bound to send a strong signal to the Sadar electorate. And why not? He has taken good care of the constituency -- in or out of power.
