Aditya Birla has left behind a model for generations to follow - Ratan Tata

Sabarinath M
Mumbai, Aug 17: "I admired Aditya Birla because of his great humility and the vigour with which he lived," said Tata Sons chairman Ratan Tata.

Inaugurating the premiere of a documentary film on Aditya Birla, Tata said Birla had left a model of business practices for generations to emulate.

In a speech laced with dollops of his long association with Birla, he said: "I cannot claim to be a close friend of Birla. But between me and him there was a warmth. Birla was a complete human being in the sense he had pursued his artistic interests despite being busy building a business empire." In his opening remarks, Aditya Birla group chairman Kumar Mangalam Birla said: "My father's life, though cut short, was livid with uncommon courage and determination. My father always admired the Tata group for its humane approach."

Describing Aditya Birla's life as a celebration of triumph, the maker of the documentary Zafar Hai said that Birla had an umblical cord linked to his heritage that was the guiding force throughouthis life. The short film, "A Brilliant Sun: The Life of Aditya Vikram Birla", is an attempt to delve into the 51 years of Birla's life. The film opens with Aditya Birla's modest beginnings in south-east Asia and goes on to describe his business triumphs.

The documentary also has a few celebrities speaking about Birla's achievements. Former finance minister Manmohan Singh praises Aditya Birla by saying that he had the courage to establish business abroad at a time nobody in India even thought of it. The documentary is directed by noted short film-maker Zafar Hai, and the background music is given by Pandit Shiv Kumar Sharma and Pandit Hari Prasad Chaurasia.
