Cong calls NDA agenda `disastrous'

Santosh Tiwary
New Delhi, Aug 17: The Congress has termed NDA's agenda for governance a "recipe for disaster". Briefing mediapersons at the party headquarters on Tuesday, spokesperson Kapil Sibal said that the absence of specific measures in the agenda with regard to real problems of the people was alarming.

Sibal said the agenda released by Prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee on Monday resembled the annual report of a corporate house with no balance sheet attached.

"The commodity which this corporate house wants to package and market is Atal Bihari Vajpayee," said Sibal, adding that the agenda has portrayed `Swadeshi PM in Videshi paper'.

He pointed out that there was no mention of allies in the agenda this time because BJP was not sure of its alliance partners.

Reacting on the proposal for a fixed five year term for Lok Sabha, Sibal said that the remedy for a government to last for five years cannot be a legal one.

"The solution to the problem does not lie in law, it lies in a strong political system," he said.Once the smaller parties are assured of a fixed five-year term, they will start blackmailing the ruling party, he added.

On debarring the people of foreign origin from holding any public office, Sibal said that the proposal was directed towards Congress president Sonia Gandhi. "They know that Sonia Gandhi is the main threat for them. They want to debar her from holding any public office legally."

Sibal said that the formulation on proxy voting in the agenda with regard to the armed forces was a bizarre idea. "Instead of taking realistic and practical steps in order to ensure that the members of armed forces are able to exercise their franchise, proxy voting is being projected as the way out," he said. This is an absurd and unsustainable formulation which is fundamentally undemocratic, said Sibal.

The Congress spokesperson said that instead of outlining an agenda to alleviate poverty, provide employment and basic health, strengthen the agricultural sector, address the problems of minorities, BJP washarping on the insignificant issues.

Sibal said that his party has noted with satisfaction that NDA was no longer harping on the `Bomb, Budget and Bus' adding that the focus now was on Bhookh, Bhay and Bhrashtachar, three wholly different set of B's. The previous track record of BJP hardly suggests any positive outcome on these issues, he added.

Sibal said that most of the points of the previous agenda have been repeated adding that only 12 out of the 42 points were new. "If the previous experience is any indication, NDA is getting to be longer on promises, and shorter on delivery," he added.
