New Delhi, Aug 16: With a view to safeguarding investors' interest, the government will allow the change of name of companies to reflect the software only if a substantial portion of their income is derived from computer software and is shown so in their certified accounts. The misuse of name would be checked by the registrar of companies, an official release said here today. Many companies had changed their names to indicate as if they were in the business of computer software.
Since the information technology companies command hefty premium in the stock market, many firms had included words like infosys, software, systems, info-systems, computers, cyber, cyberspare in their names to dupe gullible investors.
President of the National Association of Software and Service Companies (NASSCOM) Dewang Mehta welcomed the move saying the decision would not only protect investors' interest but also help genuine IT companies to maintain their reputation. Many initial public offerings of the software companieswere oversubscribed many times tempting many dubious firms to take advantage.
