New Delhi, Aug 16: Cotton textile goods exports declined by 1.59 per cent during the first quarter of the current fiscal, despite overall textile exports maintaining a positive growth.Cotton textile exports during April-June slid to 844.09 million dollars (Rs 3,618.63 crore) against 857.73 million dollars (Rs 3,505.52 crore) a year ago, a Cotton Textiles Export Promotion Council (Texprocil) data said.
Shipments showed a rise in rupee terms mainly due to depreciation of its value against the US dollar.
While exports of cotton fabrics and sewing thread declined, that of cotton yarn and made-ups showed a rise during the first quarter.
Exports of cotton made-ups declined by 16.92 per cent in the first quarter to 238.29 million dollars (Rs 1,021.56 crore) from 286.83 million dollars (Rs 1,172.25 crore).
In terms of volume, too, exports dipped to 484.57 million sq metres (MSM) against 588.20 MSM during the same period a year ago.
Mill-made fabric exports declined by 15 per cent, that of powerloom by10.75 per cent and knitted by 13.60 per cent in terms of rupee during the period.
Cotton yarn exports during April-July increased by 391.72 million dollars (Rs 1,679.31 crore) from 358.19 million dollars (Rs 1,463.94 crore) a year ago, to further signal the turnaround in export growth after sharp fall last year.
In terms of volume, it was up to 139.46 million kg from 118.16 million kg last year with average price realisation declining to 2.81 dollars from 3.12 dollars last year.
Sewing thread exports slid by 19.49 per cent to 0.53 million dollars (Rs 2.38 crore) in the first quarter from 0.66 million dollars (Rs 2.70 crore) last year.
Cotton made-ups exports during April-July increased by a marginal 0.71 per cent to 213.55 million dollars (Rs 915.47 crore) from 212.05 million dollars (Rs 866.63 crore) last year.
While mill-made made-ups exports increased by 50 per cent, that of powerloom decreased by 6.61 per cent and knitted by 77.68 per cent in rupee terms.
On a month-to-month basis, cottontextiles were up to Rs 1,209.25 crore in June from Rs 1,014.62 crore in May.
All sectors -- fabrics, yarn and made-ups- showed an increasing trend in exports in June compared to shipments in May.
For the January-June period of the annual year, cotton textiles exports registered a 12.18 per cent decline to 508.8 million dollars (Rs 2,170.37 crore) against 579.40 million dollars (Rs 2,321.42 crore).
