Telecom operators may seek Nov 30 deadline for Parliament okay

Siddharth Zarabi
New Delhi, Aug 9: Private cellular and basic service providers are likely to insist that they will undertake the implementation of the migration package subject to the package being approved by Parliament on or before November 30, 1999.

The operators are expected to give a joint undertaking under the aegis of the Cellular Operators Association of India and Association of Basic Telecom Operators to the Delhi High Court on Tuesday. This means that the operators will not submit individual letters to this effect before the court. In case Parliament disapproves the migration package, the operators have agreed not to claim any rights under the package, but on the condition that "status-quo" as on July 31, 1999 remains in operation. This in effect means that the existing licensees will revert to their legal rights and remedies as were available to them as of July 31, 1999.
