BJP decides to go it alone in AP

PRESS TRUST OF INDIA
Hyderabad, Aug 8: In a dramatic development with a bearing on poll alliances, the BJP in Andhra Pradesh on Sunday decided to go it alone in the coming elections to Lok Sabha and Assembly, ruling out the much-awaited tie-up with the Telugu Desam party (TDP).

A meeting of the state BJP office-bearers here unanimously resolved to request the Central party leadership to give permission to go it alone in deference to the wishes of the party cadre across the state.

"We are confident that our Central leadership will give ago-ahead. We are very clear that there is no alliance (with TDP)", state BJP president Vidyasagar Rao told reporters after the meeting.

The meeting, attended by four MPs from the state and office-bearers, reviewed district-wise political situation and unanimously concluded that the party was in a position to win a substantial number of Assembly and Lok Sabha seats in the state if it contested on its own, Rao said.

Asked whether the party had closed the option of seat-adjustments with TDP,the BJP leader quipped "when there is no option, where is the question of closing it?"

The decision came in the midst of the on-going informal talks between TDP and BJP on seat-sharing agreement and reports that the deal was set to be clinched in a couple of days. Asked why the BJP had suddenly changed its stand vis-a-vis strategic alliance with TDP, Rao said "there is nothing sudden. We have reviewed the situation in the conext of elections and felt that the party could win on its own."

When reporters pointed out that there was progress in the TDP-BJP talks on poll pact, he snapped "when there are no talks, where is the question of progress."

Asked what would be his party's relationship with TDP supremo and chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu, he said "it will be a friendly relationship."
