Rains to intensify in central India

New Delhi, Aug 8: Rainfall activity is likely to increase along the west coast and central India. Normal rainfall activity is expected over remaining parts of the country outside northeastern states where it may be subdued.WEATHER REVIEW : On July 229, the monsoon depression which lay last week over Gangetic West Bengal moved west-north-westwards and lay centred close to Siddhi in east MP. Moving further westwards it weakened into a well marked low pressure area over northwest MP on July 30 and over Rajasthan on August 2. Finally the system merged with theseasonal trough.

Another well marked low pressure area formed over northwest Bay of Bengal off Orissa coast on August . It moved inland and was located over Orissa on August 3. This system further moved northwestwards and merged with the seasonal trough.

During the week ended August 4, the southwest monsoon was vigorous in west Rajasthan, east Rajasthan and Telanganaand active in Orissa, east MP, west MP, Bihar plateau and Bihar plains on somedays of the week. Rainfall also occurred at most places in Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, Gangetic West Bengal, Vidarbha, Marathawada, coastal Karnataka and Kerala and at many places in Himachal Pradesh, sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, Konkan, Goa, south interior Karnataka and Andaman & Nicobar Islands and at few and isolated places in the rest regions of the country.

Arunachal Pradesh, Gujarat region, Daman, Dadra & Nagar Haveli, Saurashtra, Kutch, Diu, Konkan, Goa, central Maharashtra, Lakshadweep, Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry received scanty rainfall whilst Andaman & Nicobar Islands, sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, Gangetic West Bengal, east UP, plains of west UP, hills of west UP, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, J&K, coastal Andhra Pradesh, Rayalaseema and south interior Karnataka received deficient rainfall. During the period June 1 to August 4, 32 out of 35 meteorological sub-divisions covering 92 per cent area and 68 per cent districts of the country received normal to excessrainfall and 3 meteorological sub-divisions received deficient rainfall.
