New Delhi, Aug 8: The Khadi & Village Industries Commission (KVIC) after undertaking a nationwide survey for streamlining the marketing network and strategies for its products and services, has planned to set up a Khadi Marketing Development Corporation (KMDC). It has decided to sell its products under the new brand name `Sarvodaya'.KVIC has also decided to tie-up with fashion technology institutions in the country like IIFT and NIFT for fabrication and sale of high fashion ladies garments like salwar kameez, kurtas and churidars. This is intended to introduce khadi, silk and superfine cotton products in the premium segment of the designer garments market.
With a view to boosting the marketing prospects for designer garments, KVIC has decided to launch a JV for initially opening two sales counters in collaboration with Small Industries Development Bank of India (SIDBI). The high fashion khadi garments will also be available on khadi sale counters in metros and other important urban cities.
Thedepartment of SSI and ARI in the Union Ministry of Industries has already approved of the scheme for setting up the KMDC. The announcement of this decision is likely to take place soon with consultation with the Election Commission.
KMDC will channelise all marketing strategies for KVIC. KVIC had earlier conducted experimental trials for fabrications and processing of high fashion ladies garment which had met with some success in the market.KVIC has also decided to vend honey, pickles and incense sticks under its new brand name Sarvodaya--initially, in four cities. The first marketing launch will be in Mumbai on August 9, followed by Bangalore on August 11, New Delhi on August 14 and Ernakulam on August 16.In the second phase, soaps and spices will be launched under the brand name `Sarvodaya'. The launch of Sarvodaya brand of village industry products by KVIC follows the recommendations of an expert committee on marketing constituted by it. The `Sarvodaya', as an umbrella brand, has been registered forvarious village industry products.
The Sarvodaya brand name is expected to help in creating distinct image for village industry products and provide the cutting edge for marketing of these products as well as positioning them in the market vis-a-vis with other competing brands.
The marketing of Sarvodaya brand village industry products by KVIC is expected to step up employment in the northeast and other economically backward areas. As a part of its aggressive marketing strategy, the KVIC has already signed an MoU with the directorate general of supply and disposal of the Union government for purchase of `eco-friendly' papers, envelopes and office stationery manufactured by KVIC units.
