Zinc fares best among non-ferrous metals

Ashok B Sharma
New Delhi: Amongst the production of non-ferrous metals in the country in the period April-June 1999, zinc has fared the best by surpassing both the target and the level achieved in the corresponding period in the previous year. Gold output has fared badly by both falling below the target and the level achieved in the corresponding period in the previous year.

Aluminium and lead output has surpassed the levels achieved in the corresponding period in the previous year but fell short of fixed targets. Aluminium output could have achieved target level, but for the poor performance of Madras Aluminium Company Ltd (Malco) and partly due to Nalco's output marginally falling short of target. Continuos cast copper rods output by Hinduustan Copper Ltd (HCL) in the current period, on the otherhand, surpased the target but declined against the level achieved in the corresponding period in the previous year.

The total zinc production in April-June 1999 in the organised sector namely, the publicsector unit, HindustanZinc Ltd (HZL) and the private sector unit, Binani Industries Ltd (BIL) is 39,554 tonne as against the target of 37,250 tonne and the level achieved in the corresponding period in the previous year at 35,875 tonne. This mainly due to the record production of zinc by HZL at 32,949 tonne in the current period.

The total production of gold by Bharat Gold Mines Ltd (BGML) and Hutti Gold Mines Ltd (HGML) during April-June, 1999 was only 380.632 kg as against the target of 531.80 kg and the level of acievement in the corresponding period in the previous year at 461.638 kg.

The total production of aluminium by two public sector units, namely Bharat Aluminium Company Ltd (Balco) and National Aluminium Company Ltd (Nalco) and three private sector units, namely, Indian Aluminium Company Ltd (Indal), Hindustan Aluminium Company Ltd (Hindalco) and Madras Aluminium Company Ltd (Malco) in April-June 1999 was at 1,45,842 tonne, surpassing both the fixed target at 1,47,038 tonne and the level of acievement in thecorresponding period in the previous year at 1,28,846 tonne. All the companies has shown a record production of surpassing both the respective targets and respective achievement levels in the corresponding period in the previous year, with the expection of Malco whose poor production of 1,371 tonne fell short of both the target and its achievement level in the corresponding period in the previous year and Nalco whose production of 49,405 tonne marginally fell short of the target. The total production of lead in April-June 1999 by the public sector, Hindustan Zinc Ltd and the private sector, Indian Lead Ltd (ILL) was 9,559 tonne which surpassed the acievement level of 9,397 tonne in the corresponding period in the previous year at 9,397 tonne but fell short of the target fixed at 12,500 tonne. Lead production in the current period could have achieved the target but for the poor production by ILL at only 1,976 tonne.
