Sri Lanka to buy 1 lakh tonnes of rice locally
REUTERS
Colombo: Sri Lanka's Co-operative Wholesale Establishment (CWE) has tendered to buy 1,00,000 tonne of rice from local farmers for delivery before November 19, officials of the establishment said. They said the tender, which will close on August 25, is an attempt to bring down the rising cost of rice in the local market. The CWE, the commodity purchasing agency of the government, usually sells products at slightly lower prices than the market. The tender is for 30,000 tonne of white raw rice, 25,000 tonne of red raw rice and 45,000 tonne each of three other local varieties. Sri Lanka is targeting a paddy output of 148 million bushels during the two harvest seasons in 1999/2000, but agriculture and lands ministry officials have said the country might have to settle for less.Copyright © 1999 Indian Express Newspapers (Bombay) Ltd.
