Wipro plans to launch laptops in India

K Baburajan
Bangalore, July 20: The Wipro group is contemplating to make a debut in the domestic laptop market with its own branded product during the next fiscal. The company is in negotiations with some tier-I global component suppliers for the purpose.

The infotech giant is exploring various options to enter the portable PC segment. One of the options will be to assemble the product in its new manufacturing facility coming up in Pondicherry, with an investment of Rs 10 crore.

"We will also be able to source the finished laptops from international leaders like Gigabyte of Taiwan. However, we are yet to take any decision on this," Wipro Computers and Systems Integration Division chief executive officer Suresh Vaswani said.

He told The Financial Express the company is looking at a 5-6 per cent marketshare in the domestic PC market during the year with the launch of its complete range of computers. Currently, Wipro enjoys a three per cent marketshare in this segment.

According to Wipro vice-chairman ArunThiagarajan, the group has finalised the price at which the group is intending to acquire the Acer shares in its joint venture subsidiary Wipro Acer Ltd. "However, the completion of the acquisition of shares will take another few months from now," Thiagarajan said without divulging the price.

Meanwhile, Wipro on Tuesday unveiled its complete range of computers in the country. The four new products include Wipro Mentor - the corporate PC, Wipro Voyager - the home PC range, Wipro NetPower - the server and Wipro Grafika - the engineering workstation.

Wipro and Hewlett-Packard have also announced a strategic alliance for bundling the HP openview desktop administrator software along with Wipro Mentor. "The new range of products will enable the group to aim for the position of being India's numero uno PC company within the next two years," Thiagarajan said.

The group is planning to unveil another range of home PCs in the country. Wipro Voyager is a comprehensive home computer range which comes withanti-virus, encyclopedia and additional software bundled on the `M' series. It is also unveiling home PCs with internet bundling option in certain cities across the country.

Wipro Infotech restructured its computer business when it relaunched its own brand of computers - Wipro SuperGenius - in June 1998 and acquired Acer's equity in the joint venture in April 1999. Wipro SuperGenius PCs sold 24,000 units in fiscal 1998-99, recording a marketshare of 2.8 per cent. In the first quarter of 1999-2000, it clocked a marketshare of 3.5 per cent of about 2 lakh PCs sold during the period.
