NCP to review Enron deal if it comes to power, says Pawar

Dilip Bisoi
Bhubaneswar, July 19: Nationalist Congress Party president Sharad Pawar said on Monday that his party will review the Enron Power Project deal signed by the Shiv Sena-Bharatiya Janata Party combine if it comes to power in Maharashtra.

"The revised agreement signed by the Shiv Sena-BJP government is heavily loaded against the interests of the people of Maharashtra. So we would definitely look into the agreement papers," Pawar told The Financial Express.

"When we signed the agreement, the value of the dollar was Rs 27. The revision and the subsequent delay has increased the project cost because of the steep increase in the dollar price," he said.

Stating that his party is not against the project, he said efforts would be made to control the damages done by the Shiv Sena government. The Maratha strongman said the Enron fiasco has sent wrong signals to investors all over the world, thereby relegating Maharashtra, which was once the country's top investor-friendly state, to the sixthposition.

Commenting on his party's economic agenda, Pawar said it would pursue the liberalisation policy while simultaneously encouraging state intervention in some sectors to protect the common man's interests. NCP's economic agenda will be announced very soon, he said.

Pawar addressed NCP's first youth rally at Cuttack on Sunday. He was accompanied by former Lok Sabha speaker PA Sangma, Tariq Anwar and Dewender Diwedy as well as Orissa NCP president Soumya Ranjan Patnaik.

Before leaving for Delhi, Pawar told reporters on Monday that his party would oppose the BJP in the forthcoming elections. Ruling out the possibility of joining the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance, Pawar said NCP will not ally with parties linked to the BJP. Stating that NCP will contest some Lok Sabha seats in some states, Pawar said discussions have already begun with like-minded parties as well as some regional outfits. In Uttar Pradesh, the NCP will have electoral alliance with the Samajwadi Party. Discussions have startedwith Tamil Maanila Congress for a poll pact.

"We are waiting for the outcome of the Janata Dal national executive meeting to initiate a dialogue with leaders who are thinking on our lines," he said. Welcoming the Shiv Sena-BJP government's decision to hold the assembly polls in Maharashtra along with the Lok Sabha polls, Pawar said: "The people will get a chance to get rid of the corrupt government." "The Nationalist Congress Party is definitely going to come to power in Maharashtra," he said confidently.
