Calcutta: The Calcutta Dock System (CDS) of the Calcutta Port Trust (CPT) handled as many as 3,365 TEUs of containers during the period from July 9 to 15. According to CPT figures, out of them 945 TEUs went to Singapore and Colombo ports.Last week CDS handled 2,975 TEUs and of them 1,675 TEUs sailed out to different ports.
After a gap of at least two weeks, two consignments of logs totalling 9,421 cubic metres arrived at the Calcutta docks during the week. In terms of volumes handled, logs are the second largest commodity handled at the dock which are generally imported from Malaysia, Singapore and Myanmar.
Flow of imported sugar resumed at both the Calcutta and Haldia docks of CPT this week. Last week it was nil after months of continuous imports.
According to sources, Shun Yi arrived at Kulpi under CDS with 12,038 tonnes of sugar and at the same time 6,000 tonnes of sugar on Nepal account was handled at the Haldia dock.
Throughput of petroleum, oil & lubricant (POL) products at both the docksystems of CPT declined remarkably. The Calcutta docks, according to sources, handled 13,000 tonnes of superior kerosene oil during the week compared to 31,500 tonnes previous week.
Besides, throughput of POL products at Haldia oil jetty dipped to 44,000 tonnes compared to a record of 1,11,000 tonnes in the previous week.According to sources, the throughput could have been at least 15,877 tonnes more had not Shakti Doot, carrying 8,877 tonnes of super kerosene oil and 7,000 tonnes of high speed diesel, been out of commission since July 10 when her engine broke down on the way from the Sandheads to Haldia.
Meanwhile, three consignments of phosphoric acid weighing a total of 18,311 tonnes arrived at Haldia dock and another of 11,947 tonnes has been waiting at the Sandheads since July 15 on board NCC Baha. CPT sources said that it would be brought to Haldia dock within a day or two.
On the other hand, crude handling at the Haldia oil jetty is still going on slowly. The throughput of crude there, accordingto sources, was 66,000 tonnes compared to 40,000 tonnes previous week. It was 1,43,000 tonnes the week before.
On thermal and coking coal front, three consignments of coking coal totalling 65,000 tonnes arrived at the Haldia dock after being partially unloaded at Vizag and Paradip ports. Moreover, two consignments of thermal coal went to Tuticorin port from Haldia for Tamil Nadu Electricity Board. During this period, Akbar, a passenger vessel, arrived at the Calcutta docks with 350 tonnes of general cargo from Port Blair. Another vessel, Island Princess, also arrived with 500 tonnes of general cargo including 250 tonnes of palm oil. Besides, the Haldia dock handled 3,500 tonnes of RBD palmolein.Among other commodities, the Haldia dock handled 23,502 tonnes of sulphur and 6,000 tonnes of naphtha.
