New Delhi: The Southwest monsoon covered most of the country last week. Delhi and its neighbourhood, however, continued to experience dry spell due to thin layers of scattered clouds over the sky. Rains are expected in Delhi this week.WEATHER REVIEW: A well-marked low pressure area was formed over head Bay of Bengal and adjoining coastal areas of West Bengal and Orissa on July 14. This low pressure area moved over east Madhya Pradesh (MP) and lay over west MP on July 17.
On some days of the week ended July 14, southwest monsoon was vigorous over sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim and active over Assam, Meghalaya, Bihar plains, Gangetic West Bengal, central Maharashtra, Konkan, Goa, Gujarat region and coastal Karnataka. Rainfall also occurred at most places in Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, Vidarbha, Marathawada, Kerala and Andaman & Nicobar Islands and at many places in west MP, Orissa, Bihar plateau, east Uttar Pradesh (UP), coastal Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, south interiorKarnataka and Lakshadweep. All the meteorological subdivisions of the country received rains during the week.
Plains of west UP, hills of west UP, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, west Rajasthan and east Rajasthan received scanty rainfall during the week, whilst Orissa, Himachal Pradesh, west MP, east MP, Saurashtra, Kutch, Diu, Konkan, Goa, central Maharashtra, Vidarbha, Tamil Nadu, Pondicherry, north interior Karnataka, south interior Karnataka and Kerala received deficient rainfall.
Since the start of the monsoon in June 1 till date, 22 out of 35 meteorological sub-divisions of the country and 51 per cent districts of the country received normal to excess rainfall. No meteorological sub-divisions of the country received either scanty or no rains during this period.The meteorological sub-divisions which received scanty rainfall during the current monsoon period till date are Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, plains of west UP, hills of west UP, west Rajasthan,east Rajasthan, west MP, east MP, Saurashtra, Kutch, Diu, Tamil Nadu, Pondicherry, south interior Karnataka and Kerala.WEATHER FORECAST: Rainfall activity will increase over northwest India and decrease over northeast India. Normal rainfall is expected for the remaining parts of the country.
Isolated heavy rain is likely to occur in Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, hills of west UP, sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, Konkan, Goa, coastal Karnataka, Kerala, Lakshadweep and Andaman & Nicobar Islands.
Rain or thundershowers are likely to occur at many places in Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, west MP, Gujarat, interior Maharashtra and interior Karnataka and at few places in Punjab, plains of UP, Bihar, Gangetic West Bengal, Arunachal Pradesh, Orissa and east MP. Rains are also expected at isolated places in the rest regions of the country.
