Coimbatore, July 11: The International Textile Manufacturers Federation (ITMF) has sought information on cotton contamination from the Southern India Mills' Association (Sima) for 1999 survey report. According to industry sources, information pertaining to Indian cotton varieties DCH, F-414, H-4, J-34, LRA, MCU-5 and Shankar-4 and 6 have been sought for the world-wide survey. The ITMF survey would throw light on the extent of contamination and it's nature. Contamination with organic matter like leaves, feathers, paper, leather etc, and inorganic matter like sand, rust, metal wire are common in these varieties. Oily substances and chemicals like rubber and tar are also found as contaminants in cotton. The survey has identified 16 sources of contamination.
This is the first time ITMF is asking Sima directly for information on cotton cotamination. In the 1997 survey, India had topped the list of countries producing the most contaminated cotton in the world and was followed by Pakistan.
The Federation hasalso sought information pertaining to cost factors in (circular) knitting. Details of hourly wage for skilled and unskilled personnel, operating hours and hourly wage for machine tenders have been sought apart from details on cost of building, depreciation period for machineries and accessories, customs and sales tax. However, Tirupur Exporters' Association (TEA) source said it is ``impossible'' to furnish these informations. The knitting industry of Tirupur comprises of units engaged in diverse activities and the sheer heterogeneity of the industry would go against any definite conclusions, he said.
