New Delhi, July 11: The department of economics and statistics of the Union agriculture ministry has estimated total foodgrains production at 202.54 million tonne as against the target of 204 million tonne for 1998-99.Though the final estimates of agricultural production is expected in late September, the ministry appears satisfied with this third revised estimate as the figures show a record level of foodgrains production crossing 200 million tonnes. The previous year's production was 192.43 million tonnesHowever, production of coarse cereals, a needed item for poor man's diet, has declined to 30.94 million tonnes as against the targeted 34.30 million tonnes and is below the the previous year's 31.16 million tonnes.
Though the coarse cereal output in increased to 6.18 million tonnes in the rabi season as against the output of 5.98 million tonnes in previous rabi season it marginally fell short of the target fixed at 6.50 million tonne for the current rabi season. The coarse cereal output in Kharifseason fell to 24.72 million tonnes as against the target of 27.80 million tonnes and the production level in the previous kharif season at 25.18 million tonnes.
The production of maize marginally increased in rabi seasons against the previous year's level total production of maize in both the seasons fell short of the set target owing decline in kharif maize production over the previous year's level. Production of bajra has decline to 6.88 million tonnes as against the target of 7 million tonne and previous year's level at 7.69 million tonnes. Though the production of ragi and small millets increased over previous year's level they fell short of targets. The output of barley declined to 1.48 million tonnes as against the target of 1.50 million tonnes and the productioon level of the previous year at 1.67 million tonnes.
The total production of nine oilseeds though increased to 25.68 million tonnes as against the production level of the previous year at 22.02 million tonnes, it fell short of the targetfixed at 27 million tonnes. Similarly cotton output though increased to 12.77 million bales as against the output of 11.14 million bales in the previous year, it fell short of the target fixed at 14.80 million bales. The output of sugarcane increased to 290.66 million tonnes over previous year's output of 2777.56 million tonnes, but fell short of the target fixed at 300 million tonnes.
