New Delhi, July 8: Fierce fighting is going on in both Batalik and Drass sectors in Kargil, Pakistan assurance to US about withdrawal from the Indian side of Line of Control nothwithstanding.Army spokesperson Col Bikram Singh said enemy counter-attacked Point 4875 and Twin Bump in Drass sector last night which was effectively repulsed by troops of Jat Regiment and Jammu and Kashmir Rifles. He said 46 enemy soldiers were killed in these operations while Captain Vikram Batra of Jammu and Kashmir Rifles and Captain Anuj Nayyar of Jat Regiment lost their lives along with 11 other ranks.
Giving details of other operations, he said Point 5287 and Point 4927 were captured last night by 11 Gorkha Rifles and Bihar Regiment respectively. Fourteen enemy soldiers were killed in these operations and some dead bodies had been identified as that of the soldiers of 4,5 and 8 Northern Light Infantry batallions, he said. As per last reports received from troops, fierce fighting was on to the north of the two points andmopping up operations were still in progress.
In Drass sector, a Sikh Regiment batallion evicted the enemy from a spur emanating down from Tiger Hill top. The enemy counter-attacked the position last night and lost 17 soldiers while three Indian junior commissioned officers and 11 soldiers lost their lives. Seven dead bodies of Pakistan Army soldiers were also found abandoned in shallow pits, spokesperson said.
Another major success included capture of North Bump by Naga Regiment. In this operation, 15 enemy soldiers were killed and a dead body of a Pakistani Army officer Captain Imtiaz of 68 Field Regiment had been identified. On the Indian side, one officer, Captain Prem Raj of Regiment of Artillery and 10 soldiers were killed. Spokesperson informed that during the last 48 hours, 92 enemy soldiers had been killed taking the total to 634 since the Kargil operations started. Indian casualties during the last 48 hours stood at 38 and the total at 321.
Air Force spokesperson said IAF carried out extremelyeffective precision airstrikes on an enemy supply camp 2.5 kilometres west of Tiger Hill last night. He said the daylight missions got off to a good start this morning with another lethal airstrike achieving direct hits on enemy positions about 18 kilometres north-west of Tiger Hill, north of Mushkoh Valley area.
